US Backs ASEAN's Fight Against Online Fraud

1 week ago 21

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States Ambassador to ASEAN, Kevin Kim, stated that the U.S. government continues to support ASEAN countries in strengthening efforts to combat online fraud through law enforcement cooperation and capacity building. "The key lies in law enforcement activities," Kim said during a media meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

Kim stressed the need to enhance the community's capacity to combat the escalating issue of online fraud, a need that the U.S. can address. "There is a need for capacity improvement that can be provided to ASEAN to combat such activities," Kim stated.

According to Kim, this support will be channeled through various U.S.-ASEAN cooperation mechanisms and U.S. government programs. The objective is to strengthen the capabilities of countries in the region to prevent, uncover, and prosecute the growing trend of online fraud.

He noted that online fraud cases are not only prevalent in ASEAN but in all countries. Many families have fallen victim to such fraud. Kim emphasized that addressing online fraud needs to become a norm and a joint commitment between the U.S. and ASEAN. "We need to promote the norm and principle that such activities must be stopped and addressed," he said.

Addressing online fraud is also a crucial point in the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump. "This is one of the main pillars emphasized by the President in the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, as he understands that online fraud has garnered serious attention and has impacted American citizens," Kim stated.

He added that the issue of online fraud was also on the agenda brought by U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, when attending the meeting of foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur last year. "When Secretary of State Rubio traveled to Kuala Lumpur last year for the foreign ministers' meeting, this was one of the important issues he raised because he knew that this is an issue that affects millions of people in Southeast Asia," Kim remarked.
