TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Farmers’ Almanac recently released the 2025-2026 winter forecast, hinting at the possible ‘dramatic swings and widespread wintry weather.’

With more than 200 years of experience, the weather forecaster has been utilizing prediction methods which involve the relationships between celestial events and various meteorological conditions.

Highlighting a weather pattern of “Chill, Snow, Repeat,” here’s everything to note about the upcoming 2025-2026 winter season according to the 209th edition of the Farmers’ Almanac.

When is Winter 2025-2026?

The winter forecast of the Farmers’ Almanac mentioned this year’s wintry weather to officially start on December 21, 2025, marked by a noticeable winter solstice. However, the cold and snowy conditions might arrive as early as September in some areas across the United States.

In an interview with USA TODAY, Farmers’ Almanac Editor Sandi Duncan stated that the Northern Plains to New England are inclined to experience a cold, snowy winter. Though the connoisseur simply added, “hopefully not as brutally cold as last.”

At the same time, its early advent doesn’t guarantee a shorter winter period. It is forecasted that the wintry weather could stay for a little through April next year, specifically in Great Lakes, New England, and the Northern Plains.

Winter Forecast for 2025-2026 Season Across the US

The Farmers’ Almanac predicted a wet winter to arrive in the Southwest, alongside near-average temperature. Meanwhile the Northern portions of Southeast, particularly in the Appalachian regions, are up to occasional snow events.

The winter forecaster further explained the possibility of frequent snowstorms in New England where the area around the Atlantic Coast is expected to combine significant rain and snow from time to time. For certain parts in the mountains of the Mid-Atlantic region, the Farmers’ Almanac sees some decent snow.

Moving to the Pacific Northwest mountains, some incredible snowfall totals are on the way to greet snowlovers. In the meantime, classic winter wonderland will be happening around The Great Lakes, North Central, and Ohio Valley states.

In the Southern Plains, including Oklahoma, western Kansas, and some parts of Nebraska and New Mexico, as well as Texas, limited snow is predicted to arrive with multiple cold rain events, periodic cold snaps, and occasional freezing precipitation.

Coldest Outbreak of Winter 2025-2026

For the upcoming winter season, coldest temperatures are slated to arrive from the Northern Plains to New England. According to the weather forecaster, there will also be a shivering cold snap in mid-January. Furthermore, other regions– especially in Washington and Idaho in the Northwest are predicted to experience cold winters.

Signs of Bad Winter Coming

The Farmers’ Almanac released a string of natural clues that might indicate a tough winter freeze with lots of cold temperatures and snow. Some of them are as follow:

  • Woodpeckers sharing the same tree

  • Geese and ducks flying south earlier than normal

  • Monarch butterflies starting migration sooner

  • Cows growing thick hair on the back of their necks

  • Raccoons with very thick tails and bright rings

  • Ants marching in straight lines instead of wandering

  • Bees staying in their hives earlier

  • Squirrels collecting nuts earlier than usual

  • Thick onion skins or corn husks

  • Pigs gathering sticks

With predictions of “Chill, Snow, Repeat” and signs pointing to dramatic temperature swings, the 2025-2026 winter forecast suggests a season filled with both beauty and bite. From early flurries to lingering cold well into spring, much of the U.S. should prepare for shifting conditions that test patience and planning.
