TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has released its 2025 World Giving Report, providing an updated overview of the most generous countries in the world. The report shows a significant change, with Indonesia, the previous leader, no longer in the top spot.

Most Generous Countries in the World

The new leaders are countries from Africa, where donations represent a larger portion of people's income. Here are the five most generous countries in 2025:

1. Nigeria

Nigeria makes it to the top list of the most generous countries in the world. Nigerians, on average, donate 2.83% of their per capita income. These contributions go to charities, religious organizations, and directly to those in need.

The highest donation rates are among the 35–44 age group, who give nearly 1.5 times more than those over 55 (1.18% versus 0.83%). Until the age of 55, direct donations are more common, while those over 55 tend to donate more through charities.

2. Egypt

In second place, Egypt's population donates an average of 2.45% of their per capita income. According to the report, Egyptians have a strong tradition of giving and a high awareness of the importance of charitable institutions.

3. Ghana

Ghana holds the third position with a donation percentage of 2.19 percent of its citizens' per capita income. Interestingly, Ghana is tied with China. The nation's commitment to financially supporting social and charitable purposes is noteworthy.

4. China

Despite being geographically and demographically distinct from Ghana, China demonstrates a similar level of commitment to philanthropy.

5. Kenya

Kenya holds the fifth position on the list of the most generous countries in the world. This East African nation’s citizens donate an average of 2.13 percent of their per capita income to philanthropic endeavors.

Changes in Methodology

CAF stated that the 2025 World Giving Report uses a different measurement approach. Hamid Abidin, a philanthropy researcher from the Center for Public Interest Research and Advocacy (PIRAC), explained that the new methodology is more detailed and inclusive. It measures not only the frequency of donations but also the value of donations relative to income and the various channels used for giving.

"This approach provides a deeper understanding compared to the World Giving Index (WGI), which solely relied on the frequency of donation activities," he said on Saturday, August 2, 2025.

Hamid noted that this change in methodology led to a shift in the rankings of countries that previously dominated, like Indonesia. Although Indonesia is still considered generous, countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, and China now rank higher because their donations represent a larger proportion of their income.

He stressed that public trust in charitable and social organizations is a key factor in building a strong culture of generosity. "Participation and the amount of donations will increase if people believe that their country's charitable institutions are trustworthy and play an important role in social life," Abidin concluded.

Adil Al Hasan contributed to the writing of this report.
