GOOTO.COM, Jakarta - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia is confident that Indonesia will lead the development of the electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem. He stated that the government aims to develop solar power plants with a capacity of 100 GW.
"Huayou will soon collaborate with Antam and IBC. The total investment is around US$8 billion. If all of this materializes, our target is to achieve this by the end of 2027.
Indonesia will then be one of the first countries to build an integrated ecosystem for electric vehicle batteries, covering upstream to downstream," said Bahlil, as quoted by Antara.
This effort aligns with the government’s goal to reach net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060 and follows President Prabowo Subianto’s directives to accelerate the downstream electric vehicle industry.
The use of new and renewable energy (EBT) for electricity is also a priority that will create opportunities for the domestic battery industry.
"We require that all batteries for electric power use Indonesian-made products. This is a huge market. It will support electricity availability for local cooperatives. We will use electric trucks and motorcycles. This effort also supports energy transition and energy sovereignty," he said.
With a battery ecosystem for electric vehicles in place, Indonesia can become a prime destination for efficient investment since raw materials and infrastructure are available.
"There is no reason, in my view, not to make efficient investments in Indonesia. The market is here, the raw materials are here, the ecosystem is here, and new renewable energy is here," Bahlil added.
Regarding downstreaming, which is the government’s flagship program, Bahlil said it will be a catalyst for reaching the targeted 8 percent economic growth by 2029.
Downstreaming is also expected to boost job creation, promote economic equality across regions, and increase state revenue.
