TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Geophysics Station in Pasuruan, East Java, recorded 26 aftershocks as of Friday morning, September 26, with weakened magnitude ranging from 3.6 to 1.8.
On Thursday afternoon at 04.04 p.m., BMKG reported a magnitude of 5.7 earthquake, which was later updated to 5.4, centered 46 kilometers northeast of Banyuwangi, with a depth of 12 kilometers. The tremor did not pose tsunami threats.
"The people of Situbondo only felt the main earthquake with 5.4 magnitude," said Expert Staff of BMKG Pasuruan Geophysics Station, Syawaldin Ridha, in the earthquake-struck area in Sumberwaru Village, Banyuputih District, Situbondo Regency, on Friday, as quoted by Antara.
He revealed that the Baluran National Park area, Banyuputih District, Situbondo, is a seismic zone, as a few years before, an earthquake occurred, but this time is the strongest and has the most impact.
Based on the survey conducted by BMKG Pasuruan Geophysics Station, Syawaldin went on, the average houses collapsed due to the shock of the tremor, as they were not built to withstand an earthquake, making them more vulnerable.
"We urge residents, especially in quake-prone areas, to build houses according to standards, although it may be costly, but this is for the sake of safety," he said.
Until Friday afternoon, the Situbondo Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) noted that there were 99 houses affected by the earthquake spread across four villages in Banyuputih District, namely Sumberwaru, Wonorejo, Sumberanyar, and Sumberejo.
