TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A majority of state delegations walked out of the UN General Assembly in an extraordinary scene of protest, just before Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahi begin his address on Friday, September 26, 2025.
As reported by Anadolu and Middle East Eye, Netanyahu started delivering his speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly as the first speaker of the day.
The mass walkout of hundreds of diplomats was done in protest against the ongoing Israel genocide in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of over 65,500 Palestinian reisdents in the enclave since October 2023, most of whom are women and children.
It's also a protest against Israel's repeated attacks on several neighboring countries in the Middle East.
Almost all representatives from Arab and Muslim countries appeared to leave, along with colleagues from several African and some European countries.
As Netanyahu took the stage, diplomats were seen hastily leaving as Netanyahu entered the main hall to speak from the podium, mimicking the protest action from last year.
The walkout created a line at the exits as people left the room, while the United States delegation applauded Netanyahu, who stood in silence during the protest.
The Brazilian delegation in the hall was seen wearing traditional Palestinian keffiyeh.
Over the past week, the Palestinian Authority mission to the UN has sent letters to world leaders urging them to walk out during Netanyahu's speech, condemning him as a "war criminal."
