TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestine has applied for full membership for BRICS, but has not received a response, and plans to continue participating as an observer, said the Palestinian Ambassador to Russia, Abdel Hafiz Nofal, to RIA Novosti, as quoted by Anadolu on Friday, September 26, 2025.
"But as you know, Palestine has certain conditions. I believe that until these conditions allow us to become a full member, Palestine will participate in the union as a guest. So far, we haven’t received any answer," Nofal said.
BRICS is an intergovernmental association formed in 2006. Initiated by Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, the group later granted full membership to Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in 2024.
Indonesia became a full member of BRICS in 2025.
As reported by Azerbaijani media Caliber, there are 11 countries with observer or partner status - including Vietnam, which became a partner of BRICS in June 2025.
On September 18, diplomatic sources revealed that Pakistan is expected to obtain full membership in BRICS at the bloc's 18th or 19th annual summit, scheduled for 2025 or 2026.
Today, BRICS represents more than half of the world's population, contributes nearly 30% of the global GDP, and accounts for 20% of global trade. The group attributes these achievements to its guiding principles of openness, inclusiveness, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the BRICS economies collectively recorded a 4% GDP growth in 2024, surpassing the global average. In its expanded format, the group covers 31% of the world's landmass, represents 46% of the global population, and controls about 20% of world trade. BRICS also holds about 40% of the world's oil reserves and production.
Encompassing Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America, BRICS unites diverse civilizations and increasingly serves as a symbol of the growing influence of the "Global South."
