TEMPO.COJakarta - DARK clouds still hung over Jakarta when a dozen construction workers moved about the Indonesia 1 twin towers project site. Heavy rain had just swept through the area around the skyscraper, which rises near the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout in Central Jakarta. Several workers prepared to clear debris and haul it away with wheelbarrows.

From the upper floors of Plaza Indonesia, which stands adjacent to the project, dozens of workers could be seen gathering near the main gate of the tower complex. They had just finished their shift on Wednesday afternoon, April 8, 2026.

Eddy, a construction worker, said he had only recently started working on the Indonesia 1 project. He had just moved from a site in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java, and did not know how long his contract would last at the project owned by Surya Paloh, the General Chair of the National Democrat (NasDem) Party. “I’ve only working been here for a day,” he said.

Activity at the Indonesia 1 site has picked up again, with construction workers moving back and forth, heavy equipment vehicles passing through, and the clang of sledgehammers striking steel. Just months earlier, the project area—inaugurated by the seventh president Joko Widodo—had fallen silent. Media Properti Indonesia, an affiliate of the Media Group owned by Surya, faced funding difficulties in completing the 300-meter skyscraper.
