TEMPO.COJakarta - Four out of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have condemned Israel's plan to occupy Gaza, with the United States as the sole country to voice support for the action.

According to a report by Anadolu, Russia, China, Britain, and France all expressed strong opposition to the Israeli Security Cabinet's approval of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan for a full occupation of Gaza and the eviction of Palestinian residents.

Russia

Russian Deputy Permanent Representative Dmitry Polyanskiy called the decision "a gross violation of international law" and accused Israel of "blatant disregard for the appeals of the international community."

He also accused Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar of hypocrisy, claiming Sa'ar was aware of the cabinet's decision during his Security Council appearance while expressing concern for the hostages.

China

Permanent Representative to the UN Fu Cong urged Israel to "stop this dangerous move at once," stating that "Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people" and is "an integral part of the Palestinian territory."

He emphasized that "any action that seeks to alter its demographic and territorial structure must be met with utmost rejection and resistance."

China also warned against "the illusion of military supremacy" and demanded that Israel fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law by opening border crossings and lifting aid restrictions.

UK

UK Deputy Permanent Representative James Kariuk called the decision "wrong" and warned that "expanding military operations will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict" or "secure the release of the hostages."

He argued that the plan would only deepen the suffering of Palestinians and increase bloodshed, urging Israel to lift restrictions on aid shipments.

France

French Deputy Permanent Representative Jay Dharmadhikari urged Israel to revoke the decision, stating that France strongly opposes any plans for occupation, annexation, and settlement in the Gaza Strip. He added that implementing the plan "will in no way contribute to the security of Israel and its nationals."

The U.S. and Europe Respond

In contrast to the other permanent members, Acting U.S. Deputy Representative Dorothy Shea defended Israel's "right to defend itself."

She blamed Hamas for the ongoing issues, stating that the group "refuses to accept a ceasefire." Hamas has repeatedly said it would release all remaining Israeli hostages if Israel agrees to a permanent ceasefire, withdraws its troops from Gaza, and allows humanitarian aid.

In a separate statement, as reported by Anadolu, eight European countries also strongly condemned the Israeli government's plan. They are Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain.

Their joint statement denounced the intensification of the occupation and military attacks, noting that the decision "will only deepen the humanitarian crisis and further endanger the remaining hostages’ lives."

The foreign ministers warned that the plan would lead to an unacceptable number of deaths and the forced expulsion of nearly one million Palestinian civilians.

They "firmly reject any demographic or territorial changes in the Occupied Palestinian Territory," emphasizing that such actions violate international law.

The ministers also stated that the plan is a "serious obstacle to the implementation of a two-state solution" and that "Gaza must be an integral part of the State of Palestine, along with the West Bank, including East Jerusalem."

"We continue to call for an immediate ceasefire agreement and a permanent end to hostilities, for the immediate release of all hostages at the hands of Hamas and for the rapid, unimpeded and large-scale entry of humanitarian aid," it added.
