TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said the government’s Free Nutritious Meal program has helped stabilize domestic chicken egg prices.
“Alhamdulillah, the Free Nutritious Meal program has had an extraordinary impact. It has made egg prices stable,” Amran said at the Ministry of Agriculture complex in South Jakarta on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
He explained that the program absorbs eggs from small-scale and independent farmers when market prices decline, helping prevent sharp drops at the producer level. Meanwhile, large private companies are encouraged to focus on export markets.
“This is a good collaboration between smallholder farmers and large companies. It is part of a long-term strategy,” he said.
Data from Statistics Indonesia show that the national average price of chicken eggs stood at Rp 32,006 per kilogram in the fourth week of February. Although this marked a 0.85 percent decline from January 2026, the price remained above the government’s upper reference purchase price of Rp 30,000 per kilogram.
Head of Statistics Indonesia Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti noted that the number of regions experiencing price increases has grown. As of the fourth week of February, 131 regencies and cities reported rising egg prices, up from 105 regions in the previous week.
The sharpest increase was recorded in Boven Digoel Regency, where the egg price index surged 12.89 percent in the fourth week of February, pushing prices to Rp 68,056 per kilogram—126.85 percent above the reference price.
The highest egg prices were recorded in Intan Jaya Regency and Mamberamo Tengah Regency, at Rp 100,000 per kilogram, followed by Puncak Jaya Regency, where prices reached Rp 90,000 per kilogram.
Amalia urged regional administrations to boost the supply of hybrid chicken eggs ahead of Eid al-Fitr to curb further price volatility.
“Several cities need to increase the supply of hybrid chickens so that prices can be better controlled before Eid al-Fitr,” she said.
