TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The fierce competition for power, full of intrigue that captivated audiences in HBO’s Game of Thrones, is expected to hit the big screen. Warner Bros. will officially develop a film adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series.
George R.R. Martin first hinted at the project in a January interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that HBO and Warner Bros.’ film division are working on a cinematic version of the series. The film is envisioned to be as massive as Dune, with Beau Willimon attached as the screenwriter.
After Warner Bros. Acquisition
There is currently no certainty regarding what changes Warner Bros. may make to the Game of Thrones adaptation. This is closely tied to the sale of the studio to Paramount Skydance, which is expected to take place in the near future.
If the merger is approved, the new management could cancel films that are currently in development.
On the other hand, Paramount CEO David Ellison has publicly stated that Game of Thrones is his favorite HBO series.
Ellison also pledged to release 30 feature films after the merger is complete, signaling potential support for Warner Bros.’ planned projects. Industry reports from Variety also suggest that both Paramount and Warner Bros. will require additional high-profile content to fill their combined film slate.
Origins of the Film Idea
The idea of turning Game of Thrones into a feature film was first discussed in 2013 by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the original series’ showrunners. At the time, they proposed creating three feature films to conclude the blockbuster series, modeled after The Lord of the Rings.
However, HBO rejected the idea, choosing instead to focus on its core subscription-based business.
Overview of the Game of Thrones Film
According to USA Today, Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the plot of the rumored Game of Thrones film, though it is widely expected to serve as a prequel to the original series.
The storyline is likely to focus on Aegon I Targaryen, the first king of the Seven Kingdoms, who created the Iron Throne using the weapons of his defeated enemies.
The film is also expected to introduce new characters rather than feature the same ones from the series, while incorporating familiar franchise elements such as dragons and the Targaryen dynasty.
Essentially, the film will act as a prequel to House of the Dragon, taking the story further back into the history of Westeros and expanding the rich lore of the series.
