TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens were affected by the earthquake that struck the Balikesir province of Turkey on Sunday night, August 10, 2025.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Ankara and the Consulate General in Istanbul have communicated with Indonesian citizens there," said Director of Indonesian Citizens Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, in Jakarta on Monday, August 11, 2025, in a written statement.

Based on the report from the Indonesian Citizens Protection Task Force, there is currently no information regarding Indonesian victims of the earthquake. Self-reporting data notes that there are 185 Indonesian citizens residing in Balikesir, while the total Indonesians in Turkey reaches 10,186 people.

Emergency Situation Advisory

Judha then urged Indonesian citizens in Balikesir and surrounding areas to immediately contact the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara or the Consulate General in Istanbul if they encounter an emergency. "They will continue to monitor the impact of the earthquake that occurred," he said.

The Foreign Ministry also provided emergency hotlines for the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara at +90 532-135-22-98 and the Consulate General in Istanbul at +90 534-45. Balikesir is approximately 261 kilometers from Istanbul. The earthquake tremors were felt in other provinces such as Istanbul, Izmir, and Denizli.

Earthquake Impact in Turkey

Reported by Anadolu, the 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the Sindirgi District, Balikesir, at a depth of 11 kilometers.

According to a report from ABC, Turkish Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, stated that an 81-year-old woman died after being rescued from the rubble of a building in the city of Sindirgi. "Four other people were rescued from the building," said Yerlikaya.

Yerlikaya mentioned that 29 people were injured as a result of the earthquake, with none of them in critical condition. An initial evaluation noted 16 collapsed buildings in 68 neighborhoods, most of which are no longer in use. Two mosque towers also collapsed.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences to the victims and said he would monitor the post-earthquake response personally.

The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 shook the southern and southeastern regions of Turkey in 2023, claiming the lives of more than 53,000 people.

The disaster also caused major damage, with hundreds of thousands of buildings in 11 provinces being destroyed or severely damaged. The same tremors were felt in the northern part of Syria, causing about 6,000 deaths in the country.
