TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has offered 32 strategic transportation and infrastructure projects worth an estimated Rp207.64 trillion (US$12.4 billion) to Japanese investors.
The projects were presented during the Indonesia-Japan Transportation and Infrastructure Business Forum and Business Matching 2026, held in Tokyo on August 27-28. The forum brought together Indonesian project owners and 50 representatives from 36 Japanese companies and institutions.
Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Maria Renata Hutagalung said the projects were part of investment cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, which has continued for nearly seven decades.
The projects, offered by nine Indonesian state- and regionally owned enterprises, comprise 12 road and toll-road projects, 10 property and residential-area developments, six railway and transit-oriented development (TOD) projects, two port and logistics projects, and two steel fabrication facilities.
About three-quarters of the projects are brownfield opportunities, including operating assets, expansion plans, divestments and asset-recycling opportunities.
Projects Offered to Japanese Investors
Maria cited the Jakarta MRT and Patimban Port as examples of infrastructure projects in Indonesia involving Japanese investment.
“What distinguishes Japanese investment in Indonesia has never been solely about its value, but about engineering quality, discipline in project completion, technology and skills transfer to Indonesian workers, and a willingness to build long-term partnerships,” Maria said.
The forum also outlined financing and regulatory measures available to investors, including risk-sharing and guarantees through PT Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia (PII), long-term financing from PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI), and licensing through the Online Single Submission system.
The government also offers tax holidays and tax allowances, as well as vocational training programs and super-deduction incentives for employee training costs.
The projects can be developed under various arrangements, including divestment, joint ventures, public-private partnerships or concessions, long-term leases and other structures depending on the project.
The forum drew representatives from Japanese companies and institutions including Toyota Tsusho, Sumitomo Corporation, Obayashi, Shimizu, Penta-Ocean, Tokyu, JR East, Tokyo Metro, Mitsubishi Electric, Mizuho Bank, SMBC, JICA and JETRO.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo said it would facilitate follow-up discussions between Indonesian project owners and prospective Japanese partners.
