TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Transportation Ministry has raised the maximum fuel surcharge for scheduled domestic flights to 40 percent from 30 percent, following an increase in aviation fuel prices.
The ministry said the adjustment was part of its regular review of domestic airfares and fuel surcharge rates, which are linked to changes in jet fuel prices.
"The 40 percent is the maximum limit, so airlines can still set the fuel surcharge below that level based on their business strategies and market conditions," Director General of Air Transportation Lukman F. Laisa said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The Directorate General of Air Transportation regularly reviews the fuel surcharge based on aviation fuel prices set by fuel suppliers. The evaluation takes into account the national average jet fuel price and the price range stipulated in regulations.
Based on jet fuel prices set by aviation fuel suppliers as of September 1, 2026, the national average stood at Rp23,315 (US$1.40) per liter, up about 6.5 percent from the previous period.
With the increase in fuel prices, airlines can now apply a fuel surcharge of up to 40 percent of the applicable upper fare limit for economy-class passengers, up from the previous maximum of 30 percent.
The ministry said the adjustment was intended to balance fuel costs, airlines' operational sustainability and the interests of passengers.
The Directorate General of Air Transportation will continue monitoring domestic airfares, including fuel surcharges, to ensure they are applied transparently, accountably and in accordance with regulations.
The monitoring will cover fares charged by airlines, changes in aviation fuel prices and airlines' compliance with rules requiring the fuel surcharge to be listed separately on passenger tickets.
The Transportation Ministry will also monitor fares across all airlines to ensure they remain competitive while taking into account market conditions and consumers' purchasing power.
Lukman said the ministry would continue tracking aviation fuel prices and reviewing airfare policies to support national connectivity and the sustainability of the aviation industry.
"It is also intended to provide benefits to the public as users of air transportation services," Lukman said.
