TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Tuesday, September 1, that Tehran does not view the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan as a threat.
Responding to a question at a weekly press conference in Tehran, Baghaei said Iran saw no reason to view the agreement between the three Muslim countries as a threat, noting that Israel had repeatedly threatened the agreement both directly and indirectly.
"Islamic countries in the Middle East region have concluded that they cannot rely on the United States' promises to guarantee their security, because Washington's primary concern is protecting Israel's interests," Baghaei said, as quoted by ANTARA.
"And that they must rely on cooperation and building trust among themselves to ensure security," he said.
Baghaei said Iran had held talks with the countries involved as part of the framework, adding that Turkey, as an important neighboring country with which Iran maintains good relations, would continue to be consulted on a range of issues.
The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement was signed on August 7 in the Saudi city of Mecca by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.
The agreement aims to strengthen collective deterrence among the three countries amid rising regional and global instability. The treaty stipulated that any attack on one of the three countries would be considered an attack on all three.
