Iran-US War; Indonesia's Soekarno-Hatta Cancels Middle East Flights

5 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several flights to and from the Middle East at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport were canceled following the closure of regional airspace. However, airport management ensured that passenger services remained optimal throughout departure and arrival processes.

"In general, the situation at the terminal remains secure and conducive," stated Aziz Fahmi Harahap, Acting Assistant Deputy of Communication and Legal at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Fahmi noted that officials are handling affected passengers in accordance with established procedures. Personnel are processing the cancellation of travel documents in the immigration area and coordinating with airlines to arrange accommodation and flight rescheduling.

He explained that affected flights include Etihad Airways (EY472 to Abu Dhabi), Qatar Airways (QR954 to Doha), Qatar Airways (QR957 to Doha), Emirates (EK357 to Dubai), Etihad Airways (EY475 to Abu Dhabi), Garuda Indonesia (GA900 to Doha), and Etihad Airways (EY473 to Abu Dhabi).

For incoming traffic, Etihad Airways EY472 from Abu Dhabi and Qatar Airways QR954 from Doha have also been confirmed as canceled.

The management of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, alongside key stakeholders, continues to ensure seamless services for all users. "We are coordinating intensively with airlines, airport authorities, and other relevant agencies to anticipate operational dynamics and ensure that safety, security, and service standards are maintained," Fahmi said.

Airport management also urged prospective passengers traveling to the Middle East to actively monitor flight information through official airline channels or contact customer service for the latest updates on departure status.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced the temporary closure of parts of UAE airspace amid escalating military actions in the Middle East. The authority took this preventive step to ensure the safety of flights, aircraft crews, and passengers, as well as to protect the UAE's sovereign airspace.

The United States and Israel launched strikes on several areas in Iran in the early hours of Saturday, February 28, 2026, local time. Israel first targeted Tehran and other cities, followed by a major combat operation from the United States. Within hours, Iran responded with two waves of retaliatory strikes against Israel.

"All American and Israeli assets and interests in the Middle East have become a legitimate target. There are no red lines after this aggression, and everything is possible," a senior Iranian official told Al Jazeera.

Several carriers, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways, have adjusted flight paths to avoid active conflict zones. Airlines are diverting routes through corridors over Saudi Arabia or taking northern paths through Central Asia. These adjustments are expected to increase flight durations and operational costs.
