Israel Issues Evacuation Order for Gaza Ahead of October 7 Deadline

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIsrael has issued an evacuation deadline of October 7, 2025, for Palestinian residents in Gaza, before it takes full control of the region. This date marks the two-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel.

In Israel, the families of hostages held by militants in Gaza and opposition leaders have publicly condemned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to occupy Gaza. They believe Netanyahu's ambition to seize control of the territory will put the lives of the remaining captives in grave danger.

The Forum of Families of Hostages, an organization representing the majority of these families, has referred to the expansion of the war in Gaza as a "death sentence" for those still held captive in the enclave.

The spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that Israel's plan for the city of Gaza represents a "dangerous escalation" in the enclave. Guterres warned that any further escalation would lead to forced displacement, killings, and widespread destruction, which risks "deepening the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians."

According to three diplomatic sources cited by Al Arabiya, the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet over the weekend to discuss the plan.

Right-wing allies within Netanyahu’s coalition are advocating for the takeover of Gaza, aligning with Netanyahu's repeated vow to eradicate Hamas.

However, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has voiced opposition to the plan, arguing that it could jeopardize the lives of the remaining hostages.

Yair Lapid, the leader of the Israeli opposition, criticized the Security Cabinet’s support for the takeover, stating that the action would be "a disaster that will lead to many more disasters."

He noted that the plan to occupy Gaza is in "complete contradiction to the opinion of the military and security ranks."

There are still 50 hostages believed to be held in Gaza, though Israeli officials estimate that only 20 of them are still alive. Most of the hostages who have been released to date were freed as a result of diplomatic negotiations. Ceasefire talks, however, failed in July.
