TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday, October 13, 2025, as reported by Anadolu, that He will not be attending the International Peace Summit on Gaza in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on the Red Sea.

According to a statement from Netanyahu's office, the prime minister was invited by President Donald Trump to attend the Gaza peace summit in Egypt.

"The (Israeli) Prime Minister thanked President Trump for his invitation but stated that he would not be able to attend due to the proximity of the event to the start of the holiday," the statement said.

Netanyahu conveyed his thanks to Trump "for his efforts to expand the circle of peace - peace through strength," he added.

Egypt's presidency also confirmed that Netanyahu will not be attending the peace summit.

Egypt had previously stated that Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas would attend the peace summit "to consolidate the ceasefire agreement to stop the war in Gaza, and confirm their commitment to it."

Netanyahu has been under international scrutiny since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him on November 21, 2024.

The ICC accused Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of war crimes, including starvation as a method of warfare and intentionally directing attacks against Palestinian civilians in Gaza, as well as crimes against humanity such as murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts, allegedly committed between October 8, 2023, and May 20, 2024.

The ICC, based in The Hague, prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

Egypt signed the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC, in December 2000, but has not ratified it. This means that although Egypt acknowledges the establishment of the ICC, Egypt is not legally bound by its jurisdiction and can ignore the arrest warrant against Netanyahu, as reported by Egyptian Street.

Over 20 world leaders are expected to attend the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, which Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will jointly chair.

Egypt stated that the summit aims "to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East, and usher in a new phase of regional security and stability."

The first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement came into effect on Friday under Trump's plan to end the Israeli genocide that has been ongoing for two years in the enclave.

Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed over 67,800 Palestinian residents in Gaza, mostly women and children, rendering the enclave mostly uninhabitable.
