TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Demands to sack the coach of the Indonesian national team, Patrick Kluivert, echoed on social media. The #KluivertOut tag became a trending topic on the X platform on Monday, October 13, 2025, after the Garuda squad failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As of 12:30 p.m. local time, the tag had been used in more than 19,000 posts, placing it as the second top trend on X, just below the #Towel tag. The calls from netizens were generally expressing disappointment with the performance of the Dutch coach, who was deemed to have failed to continue the achievements of his predecessor, Shin Tae-yong.
Indonesia's journey to the 2026 World Cup came to a halt after failing to advance past the fourth round of the Asia zone qualifiers. The Red and White Team finished at the bottom of Group B after losing to Saudi Arabia and Iraq. One of the accounts, @idextratime, belonging to Extra Time Indonesia, criticized the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) for Patrick Kluivert's failure to qualify Indonesia for the 2026 World Cup. The account wrote, "PSSI's decision to appoint Patrick Kluivert has proven to be a total failure."
Hilmi Firdausi, the owner of the @Hilmi28 account, also echoed similar sentiments. He wrote, "If we fail to qualify with a coach who has struggled and pioneered from the beginning, we will accept it. If we fail to qualify because of the right starting lineup and enjoyable gameplay, we will accept it. The Chair of PSSI and the coach must take responsibility and resign. Find a coach who is more sensible and understands Asian football better. Remember, the Asian Cup is only 15 months away. Make the Indonesian people enthusiastic to support their national team again."
Similar sentiments were expressed on Instagram. For example, the @fifaworldcup.idn account posted a 37-second video showcasing referee Ma Ning's decision, which was considered detrimental to the Garuda. "Referee Ma Ning in the Iraq vs. Indonesia match made us emotional! His decision was biased," wrote the account, accompanied by the #KluivertOut tag.
The posts of the Chair of PSSI, Erick Thohir, on his personal account also became a target of criticism. Erick's apology post after Indonesia's loss to Iraq was flooded with more than 157,000 comments, mostly demanding a total evaluation within the national team. "We apologize, we have not been able to realize the dream of entering the World Cup," wrote Erick.
However, for some netizens, the issue did not stop at the match results. Many considered PSSI's decision to replace Shin Tae-yong with Kluivert as an initial mistake. "The failure of the national team is a big slap in the face. Our football feels more and more filled with interests and politics," wrote the @hardiansyah_socially account. The #KluivertOut hashtag continued to trend, becoming a symbol of widespread disappointment not only toward the coach but also toward the national football management.
As for Patrick Kluivert, he stated that he has no plans to resign from the coaching position despite the Indonesian national team's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Despite mounting public pressure, the Dutch coach emphasized that he has no plans to leave the Garuda squad. "There are no plans yet. We have to evaluate what we have gone through first. I cannot answer yet. I don't know, I really don't know what will happen," he said.
