TEMPO.COJakarta - Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), erupted again on Monday, October 13, 2025, at approximately 1:13 p.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA). The eruption spewed a towering column of volcanic ash that reached 3,000 meters (3 kilometers) above the crater.

Fransiskus Xaverius Masan, an officer at the Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano Observation Post (PGA), reported that the ash column drifted toward the west and northwest.

"This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 18.5 millimeters and a duration of 91 seconds," Fransiskus detailed in his report shortly after the event.

Eruption Intensity and Status Downgrade

This latest event follows a previous eruption on Friday, October 10, 2025, where the ash column reached 800 meters. That earlier eruption was relatively minor, with seismograph recordings showing a maximum tremor amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and a duration of 176 seconds.

The conical, 1,584-meter-tall volcano has erupted a total of 10 times in the past week. Fransiskus noted that this frequency indicates a decrease in the intensity of eruptions compared to the period preceding it.

In the preceding weeks, data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency showed that Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki had been erupting quite intensely, prompting its status to be set at Alert (Level IV).

Due to the observed decrease in intensity, the PVMBG subsequently downgraded the status to Caution (Level III) on September 29, 2025.

The PVMBG urges local communities and tourists to refrain from all activities within a six-kilometer radius of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki Mountain eruption center.

Additionally, residents in the vicinity are advised to remain vigilant regarding the potential for volcanic mudflows (lahars) in rivers originating from the peak, especially the streams or valleys located in the areas of Dulipali, Nurabelen, Nawakote, Boru, Hokeng Jaya, Nobo, Padang Pasir, and Klatanlo.

"The public should remain calm, follow the instructions of local authorities, and not believe in unclear sources of information," the official added.
