The legendary actor Jackie Chan was awarded the Career Leopard (Pardo alla Carriera) at the 78th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on Saturday night, August 9, 2025. The star's presence at Piazza Grande was greeted enthusiastically by thousands of fans who crowded the historic square.
"Buona sera (good evening)," greeted Jackie Chan with a smile and a wave, showcasing his ability to speak Italian as he ascended the stage. He then added with his typical humor, "This award is very, very heavy," he said while lifting the trophy, met with laughter and applause from the audience.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, in his brief speech, Jackie Chan expressed his gratitude. "I am very happy and feel honored to be here. Thank you to Locarno and the audience for giving me this sweet award," he said.
He also expressed his gratitude to all the directors and actors who have made him look great throughout his career. In conclusion, he conveyed warm wishes to his fans. "Because of you, I can stand here," he said.
The actor from Hong Kong then reminisced about a moment with his father who had once asked him when he was young, "Can you still fight at the age of 60?" He now confidently answers that question. "Today, I am 71 years old... and I can still fight!" he exclaimed. The statement was immediately met with cheers from the audience, as quoted from Deadline.
Fan Reception
Even before Jackie Chan arrived at the location, the enthusiasm was evident. Fans wore t-shirts with his image and carried banners that read "I Love Jackie Chan." When the screen showed Jackie Chan on the hotel balcony greeting fans, cheers immediately echoed.
When he appeared on the red carpet carrying two panda dolls and wearing different clothes, the audience's euphoria peaked. A group of fans in matching red shirts shouted, "Jackie! Jackie!"
Jackie Chan responded to the spirit with a wide smile, his iconic martial arts pose, a wave, and a kiss to the camera. Many fans and locals captured the moment on their phones since a day before the main event.
As part of the tribute, Jackie Chan also presented two classic films that he starred in and directed, namely Project A (1983) and Police Story (1985), specially screened at the festival program.
Reasons for Jackie Chan's Award
The artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, Giona A. Nazzaro, described Jackie Chan's presence as a dream come true. "Jackie Chan is an Asian megastar, a true filmmaker, and a global icon who has bridged Eastern and Western cinema," he said.
Jackie Chan is praised not only as an actor and director, but also as a stunt choreographer, producer, screenwriter, singer, athlete, and fearless stunt performer. From his childhood at the Chinese Drama Academy under the guidance of Master Yu Jim-Yuen, to being a stunt performer in the classic film A Touch of Zen, Jackie Chan has revolutionized action cinema for over six decades.
"I have been in the film industry for 64 years," said Jackie Chan on stage. "Everything I have achieved today is the result of the hard work of the great people who have worked with me."
He concluded his speech with a great hope. "I dedicate this award to the love and peace of the world. Love you all!" he shouted before mimicking a kissing sound, met with a resounding applause.
As quoted from the official website of the Locarno Film Festival, the Pardo alla Carriera award is given to figures in the film world who have made outstanding contributions to the international film industry. Supported by Ascona-Locarno Tourism, this award also aims to promote the beauty of Lake Maggiore and its surroundings.
