TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Delpedro Marhaen and several fellow Indonesian activists have been held at the Jakarta Metro Police detention center for nearly a month after being named suspects in connection with alleged incitement during a series of demonstrations at the end of August 2025.
Jakarta Metro Police have yet to show any indication of releasing them. “The investigators have reasons for the detention,” said Jakarta Metro Police Public Relations Head Brigadier General Ade Ary Syam Indradi on Monday, September 30, 2025.
Ade explained that the decision to extend detention was based on provisions in the Criminal Procedure Code.
“The reasons include sufficient evidence and concerns that the suspects might flee, tamper with evidence, or repeat their actions,” he told reporters.
Despite this, Ade noted that investigators are still considering requests for a suspension of detention, especially after several national figures offered to serve as guarantors.
Minister of Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra earlier called on the police to accelerate the legal process. “The faster, the better, so that people are not detained for too long,” Yusril said during a press conference on Friday, September 26, 2025.
While prolonged detention is legally permissible, Yusril argued that keeping suspects in custody for an extended period leaves their fate uncertain. He urged the police to transfer the case to the public prosecutor without delay.
“If there is sufficient evidence, I suggest not holding them any longer and immediately bringing the case to court,” he said.
The Jakarta Metro Police recently extended Delpedro’s detention, citing that the initial 20-day period had expired. However, his lawyer, Fadhil Alfathan, said the defense team was not informed of the specific grounds for the extension.
“We do not know the reasons used by the police,” Fadhil said on Monday, September 22, 2025.
Previously, the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) had submitted a request for suspension of detention, but the police rejected it. “Instead, their detention was prolonged,” Fadhil noted.
Delpedro and five others — Syahdan Husein, Khariq Anhar, Muzaffar Salim, Figha Lesmana, and an individual identified by the initials RAP — were arrested in early September on charges of provocation and incitement linked to demonstrations held on August 25 and 28, 2025.
