TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPSI), Andi Gani Nena Wea, announced that this year’s International Labor Day rally will be held at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta.
The announcement was made after union representatives met with Deputy House Speaker and Gerindra Party executive chairman Sufmi Dasco Ahmad at the House of Representatives (DPR) complex on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
“Regarding May Day, we have also invited Mr. Prabowo. The commemoration will proceed as planned at Monas,” Andi said.
He added that labor unions have invited President Prabowo Subianto to inaugurate the Marsinah Museum in Nganjuk, East Java, on May 2, 2026. The museum is dedicated to Marsinah, a labor activist whose death in 1993 became a symbol of workers’ rights struggles in Indonesia.
Andi expressed confidence that Prabowo would attend this year’s May Day event, noting that the president made history in 2025 by becoming the first Indonesian head of state in six decades to attend the annual Labor Day rally at Monas.
“We are optimistic the President will come again. For the first time in the history of the labor movement, he attended the May Day event last year, and we hope it will continue this year,” Andi said.
During his speech at the 2025 rally, Prabowo pledged to establish a National Labor Council and accelerate deliberations on several key bills, including the Asset Seizure Bill and the long-delayed Domestic Workers Protection Bill (PPRT).
The PPRT bill was one of the main demands raised by unions during last year’s May Day event. In their meeting with Dasco, labor representatives again urged lawmakers and the government to demonstrate their commitment to passing the legislation.
Dasco said the DPR would begin soliciting public input on the PPRT bill starting March 5, 2026. The bill has been stalled in parliament for years and remains a central demand of domestic workers and labor advocacy groups.
Prabowo previously said accelerating deliberations on the bill is necessary to uphold justice and fulfill the constitutional mandate to protect all citizens, including informal workers who have long faced vulnerabilities.
