TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Rinjani, a natural tourist attraction in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Indonesia, will reopen on August 11, 2025. The second-highest volcano in Indonesia was closed from August 1 to 10, 2025, for management improvements.
Head of Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR), Yarman, stated that the decision to reopen has undergone intensive evaluation. "We inform that the natural climbing tourism activity in 6 destinations of Mount Rinjani National Park will officially reopen starting on August 11, 2025," Yarman said in Mataram, on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
He mentioned that the management has carried out comprehensive improvements to the climbing management in the Mount Rinjani region. "The climbing routes in the area have been improved to enhance the safety and comfort of visitors," he said.
SOP Revision for Climbing
He mentioned important points that visitors need to know following the revision of the standard operating procedures (SOP) for climbing. These include route class adjustments (grade IV), guide ratios, insurance systems, and safety contingencies.
Additionally, visitors must purchase tickets online through the designated official application. "Then, this policy will be continuously evaluated to ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors," he said.
Reasons for Closure
All Mount Rinjani climbing routes were closed based on the outcome of a coordination meeting held after an accident occurred on the Lake Segara Anak Rinjani route. "This closure is valid for 10 days from August 1 to 10, 2025," said Yarman.
According to him, a coordination meeting to strengthen safety aspects and preparedness for emergency incident management at Mount Rinjani, organized by the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs as well as the Official Note of the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation of the Ministry of Forestry on July 22, 2025, decided to close all routes temporarily.
For prospective climbers who have purchased entry tickets (e-tickets) from August 1 to 10, 2025, rescheduling can be done during the remaining climbing season in 2025. "Climbers can claim a refund for the cost of purchasing entry tickets and insurance if they cancel their climbing plans on Mount Rinjani," he said.
