TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani emphasized that Indonesia's stance on the Palestinian issue has never changed or shifted.
He stressed that solidarity with the Palestinian struggle does not stem from hostility toward any religion or nation.
"Support for Palestinian independence is rooted in the history of the nation's struggle and in the constitution," Muzani declared during his opening address at the 2026 MPR Annual Session and DPR-DPD Joint Session at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Friday.
Muzani noted that the Indonesian people have experienced the bitterness of prolonged colonialism and cannot remain silent while other nations continue to live under occupation and violence.
Therefore, he reaffirmed supports for the Palestinian people's right to independence, sovereignty, and a dignified existence in their homeland. "The Indonesian nation and its people will continue to stand with the Palestinian people," he said.
Muzani elaborated that sovereignty reflects a nation's capacity to determine its own path, defend its territory, protect its citizens, manage its resources, and take positions grounded in national interests and core principles.
He added that the Indonesian Constitution provides clear guidance, mandating that the country is obligated to participate in maintaining a world order based on independence, abiding peace, and social justice.
He further continued that an independent and active foreign policy signifies the freedom to shape positions aligned with national interests without aligning with any bloc. "Indonesia must remain steadfast in rejecting war as a mechanism for settling international disputes," Muzani affirmed.
On Friday, the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), the House of Representatives (DPR), and the Regional Representative Council (DPD) convened for the MPR Annual Session and the DPR-DPD Joint Session.
The agenda features President Prabowo Subianto's presentation of state institution performance reports alongside the Presidential State Address commemorating the 81st anniversary of Indonesian independence.
Alongside the official speeches, the government will screen a video presentation highlighting the government's performance achievements. The annual session is a state event marking the 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, centered on the theme "Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia."
