TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) is reportedly planning to block digital wallets, also known as e-wallets, in cases of online gambling crimes. This suspension applies to both active and dormant e-wallet transactions. This news comes after PPATK caused a commotion by freezing passive accounts.
So, what is PPATK doing regarding these e-wallets?
The Head of PPATK, Ivan Yustiavandana, explained that handling e-wallets or fintech is different from dealing with inactive accounts in conventional banks. He stated that these measures are taken to protect the parties involved from being disadvantaged by illegal activities.
"Handling fintech is different from conventional methods. If illicit funds enter e-wallets, we will make every effort to protect the affected parties," said Ivan when contacted on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
Ivan stated that PPATK often handles various cases involving e-wallets. In the first semester of 2025, the PPATK recorded online gambling deposits through e-wallets totaling Rp1.6 trillion in 12.6 million transactions. "We have already handled many cases involving e-wallets," he said.
Previously, PPATK had frozen dormant accounts on May 15, 2025. The institution froze dormant accounts in February 2025 after finding that they were heavily misused and had become the target of criminal activity based on banking data.
Ivan mentioned that PPATK had completed the analysis of all inactive or dormant accounts. He stated that their institution no longer freezes these idle accounts. "PPATK has completed its part. All reactivation is currently being handled by the banks," said Ivan when contacted on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
According to Ivan, PPATK has simultaneously and comprehensively reviewed reports of dormant accounts from banks. PPATK's next step is monitoring the enforcement of the Know Your Customer (KYC) principles by each bank without the need to analyze dormant accounts further, which led to temporary suspensions," he said.
Previously, PPATK's Public Relations Coordinator, M. Natsir Kongah, stated that 30 million accounts have been reactivated. He explained that the unblocking has been ongoing for the past three months since the initial suspension.
