Prabowo Discusses US-Iran Conflict with Former President and Foreign Ministers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto conveyed the latest developments regarding the escalating conflict in the Middle East to the former president, vice president, foreign ministers, and chairmen of political parties in parliament. Former Foreign Minister Noer Hassan Wirajuda made this statement after attending a meeting at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday evening, March 3, 2026.

"Especially regarding what has been a concern for many of us, namely the latest developments in the war or attack by America and Israel on Iran," Hassan said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Head of State, he said, specifically highlighted the implications of the US-Israel conflict with Iran for Indonesia and the global world order.

"When the world order is no longer effective and there is no longer an opportunity for countries affected by military attacks to complain to anyone," he said.

This is because the United Nations (UN) no longer has a role, and the rules-based system remains only a concept on paper. "And indeed, it has no coercive power, especially when it comes to major powers," he said.

This situation, according to Hassan, poses a dilemma not only for Indonesia but also for other countries. Therefore, Prabowo considers it important to communicate the issues faced to the national figures present.

According to Hassan, Prabowo also discussed the economic implications of the US-Israel war against Iran.

"We are calculating the potential impact of this war on the global economy, especially regarding supplies of oil, gas, and natural gas," Hassan said.

The former foreign minister from 2001 to 2009 stated that Prabowo also discussed calculating the potential duration of the war.

"But also from the perspective of calculating how long this war will last. Previously, (US President) Donald Trump said how many days, but now he's talking about how many weeks," Hassan said.

Furthermore, Prabowo and the figures also discussed Indonesia's membership in the Board of Peace (BoP).

"We discussed it, but also in the context of current developments, whether the ongoing war in Iran will weaken the position and mandate of the BoP. We will reassess that aspect," said Hassan.

Hassan claimed that Prabowo opened a dialogue and solicited input from the national figures present. "We each tried to contribute our thoughts and suggestions to the participants," Hassan said.

President Prabowo invited former presidents, vice presidents, and foreign ministers to the Presidential Palace on Tuesday evening. In addition to former state officials, Prabowo also invited chairmen of political parties in parliament and businesspeople. The closed-door meeting, held at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, lasted approximately 3.5 hours.

Present were 6th President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and 7th President Joko Widodo. In addition to the two former presidents, former vice presidents also attended, including 10th and 12th Vice Presidents Jusuf Kalla, 11th Vice President Boediono, and 13th Vice President Ma'ruf Amin.

Party leaders in attendance included NasDem Party Chairman Surya Dharma Paloh, National Mandate Party Chairman Zulkifli Hasan, National Awakening Party Chairman Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar, and Golkar Party Chairman Bahlil Lahadalia. Additionally, Democratic Party Chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) and Prosperous Justice Party President Al Muzzammil Yusuf also accepted Prabowo's invitation.

Also in attendance was Puan Maharani, Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Central Leadership Council for Political Affairs. She represented PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Several ministers from the Red and White Cabinet were also present, including Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto, and Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti.

Furthermore, businesspeople were also present at the Presidential Palace. They are the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (Kadin Indonesia) Anindya Bakrie, the Chairperson of the Indonesian Employers Association or Apindo Shinta Kamdani, and the General Chairperson of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (BPP Hipmi) Akbar Himawan Buchari.
