TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Prabowo Subianto and Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan, have discussed the possibility of traveling to Tehran, Iran, as part of efforts to ease escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The plan was revealed by Jimly Asshiddiqie, chairman of the advisory board of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), after attending an iftar gathering hosted by Prabowo on Thursday, March 5.
Jimly said the Indonesian president shared details of a recent phone conversation with Sharif during the event.
“He (the president) said he had spoken with the prime minister of Pakistan in a phone call before this meeting,” Jimly told reporters at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday evening.
According to the former chief justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia, Prabowo and Sharif discussed their willingness to travel to Tehran to help reduce tensions in the Gulf region.
Regional tensions have surged since Israel and the United States launched joint strikes on Iran on February 28.
“The Prime Minister of Pakistan is willing to visit Tehran together with President Prabowo. That’s what the President explained earlier,” Jimly said.
However, Jimly clarified that the proposed visit is not intended to mediate between Israel and Iran.
“The Ayatollah has been killed, how can peace be offered? It’s not in that context, but it’s to prevent escalation,” he said.
He also urged the public not to misinterpret Prabowo’s intentions, stressing that the Indonesian president aims to help reduce tensions and prevent further attacks on Iran.
Separately, Sharif confirmed the phone conversation with Prabowo, describing it as “very productive,” according to a report by Antara.
Sharif said both leaders expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East.
“We agreed to maintain close coordination over the next few days to jointly advocate for peace and stability in the region,” Sharif said in an official statement.
The Pakistani prime minister added that the two leaders also discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan and agreed to remain in close contact in the coming days.
