Trump Claims India-Pakistan Conflict Ended After Trade Threat

6 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Monday that the conflict between India and Pakistan has ended after he threatened to halt trade with both countries.

"I said, 'Come on, we will trade a lot with you. But stop (the conflict) first. If you stop, we will continue trading. But if not, we will not trade at all.' ... And suddenly they said, 'I think we will stop.' They did stop, and that's because of various reasons, but trade is the main reason," Trump told reporters as quoted by Antara.

He added that the U.S. is now exploring increased trade cooperation with India and will soon begin trade negotiations with Pakistan.

"We succeeded in preventing a nuclear conflict. In my opinion, it could have been a very bad nuclear war. Millions of people could have died. So, I am very proud of that," said Trump.

Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan after a terrorist attack occurred on April 22 near Pahalgam, a city in the Jammu and Kashmir region of India.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack. The level of diplomatic relations between the two countries then deteriorated, the Indus Air Agreement was suspended, and the only land border crossing between the two countries was closed.

On May 7, India launched an airstrike and drone attack on nine locations suspected to be militant training camps in Pakistan and the Pakistani Kashmir region. India claimed the attack targeted terrorist infrastructure.

The next day, Pakistan responded to India's attack by launching missile strikes on several Indian military targets. On May 10, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire.
