Trump to Evict Homeless from Washington D.C.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday, August 10, that homeless individuals should be moved "far" from Washington, D.C. This announcement, reported by CNA, followed several days of him expressing a desire to take federal control of the U.S. capital, where he has inaccurately claimed that crime is on the rise.

The Republican Party tycoon is scheduled to hold a press conference on Monday, August 11, 2025, where he is expected to detail his plans for Washington. The city is currently run by an elected local government under the supervision of the U.S. Congress.

This is an arrangement Trump has long criticized in public. He has repeatedly threatened to federalize the city, giving the White House final authority over its governance.

"I'm going to make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before," he wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday.

"The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital," he added, as quoted by CBS News, and promised that criminals in the city would soon be imprisoned.

"It's all going to happen very fast," he said.

Hours later, Trump posted, "Before the tents, squalor, filth, and Crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the World. It will soon be that again."

Last week, the president also threatened to "exert my powers" to place Washington under federal control. A spokesperson for the FBI Field Office in Washington confirmed to CBS News on Sunday that their agents were "participating in the increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C."

Trump's latest call for a federal takeover was prompted by an alleged attack on former DOGE employee Edward Coristine in an attempted carjacking over the weekend. Following the incident, Trump shared a photo of Coristine on Tuesday and posted about the crime in the capital being "totally out of control," suggesting a federal takeover if the local government did not act immediately.

It is unlikely that the president has the authority to fully federalize the capital unless Congress repeals the 1973 law that granted city residents the power to elect their own mayor and city council.

He could, however, temporarily take control of the Metropolitan D.C. Police Department if he "determines that special conditions of an emergency nature exist which require the use of the Metropolitan Police force for federal purposes," though it is unclear whether such legal requirements have been met.

According to government statistics from last year, Washington ranks 15th among major U.S. cities in terms of its homeless population. While thousands spend each night in shelters or on the streets, the figure has decreased compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Earlier this week, Trump also threatened to deploy the National Guard as part of a crackdown on what he mistakenly referred to as rising crime in Washington.

n fact, violent crime in the capital decreased by 26 percent in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, according to police statistics.

The city's crime rate in 2024 had already reached a three-decade low, according to data released by the Department of Justice before Trump took office.

"We are not experiencing a crime spike," Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said on Sunday on MSNBC.

While the mayor, who is a Democrat, did not mention Trump by name, she stated that "any comparison to a war-torn country is hyperbolic and false."

Hours after Trump's statement, two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told HuffPost that the U.S. military was preparing to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. They said the final decision would be made by Trump, but confirmed that the troops were ready for deployment.

One official noted that it was unclear what the troops' specific duties would be, but they could be involved in protecting federal agents or performing administrative tasks to assist law enforcement.

Trump's threat to deploy the National Guard comes weeks after he deployed military reserves from California to Los Angeles to quell protests over immigration raids, despite objections from local leaders and law enforcement.

The president has frequently resorted to using the military to control American cities, many of which are under Democratic control and are often at odds with his nationalist policies.
