Trump Visits Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE for Business Deals

4 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump is visiting three Middle Eastern countries, starting Tuesday, May 13, 2025. He arrived in Saudi Arabia first and will continue to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump will pursue business deals with the Gulf countries. This is his first major foreign visit during his second term, according to the White House. Eight years ago, Trump also chose Saudi Arabia for his first foreign trip as president.

By again bypassing European allies for the oil-rich Gulf countries, Trump underscores the Middle East's growing geopolitical importance. This move also reflects his regional business ties.

The main focus of the Gulf tour is likely securing business deals. The 78-year-old President is expected to receive red-carpet treatment and luxurious royal receptions in Riyadh, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.

Saudi Arabia is reportedly ready to invest and trade US$600 billion with Washington. Trump responded, "I'll be asking the crown prince, who's a fantastic guy, to round it out to around one trillion. I think they'll do that because we've been very good to them," as reported by France 24.

A Saudi official close to the Ministry of Defense says Riyadh will push to acquire the latest F-35 fighter jets and advanced US air defense systems worth billions. "The source said, 'We will condition that the deliveries take place during Trump's term.'"

Efforts to push Saudi Arabia to recognize Israel are unlikely to be a top agenda, as Riyadh insists on the formation of a Palestinian state before any mediation.
