TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump has reportedly postponed plans to broaden military strikes against Iran. Citing internal sources, a report by The New York Times indicated the decision followed fears that expanding armed strikes could exhaust the military's dwindling stockpile of air defense missiles.
As reported by news agency Antara on Saturday, July 26, 2026, The New York Times noted that the pause stemmed from Pentagon anxieties over diminishing Patriot interceptors and other air defense munitions across the Middle East.
Senior US officials also harbor concerns over the fallout of a broader conflict, ranging from frayed ties with key Persian Gulf allies and global economic volatility to compounding energy and migration crises.
Trump reached the decision following a closed-door session with advisors and senior administration officials on Friday.
Separately, Chairperson of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine internally cautioned that while sustained, large-scale strikes remain feasible, ramping them up poses a severe risk of exhausting US interceptor stocks.
Virtually all quarters within the White House reportedly viewed the escalation strategy as ill-advised.
Earlier, news outlet Axios reported that the US military was pressing ahead with finalizing operational plans for major military actions against Iran, even as President Trump withheld an official order.
The report suggested that Trump ordered a halt to fresh strikes on Iran starting Friday, July 25, bringing a pause to 13 straight days of relentless bombardment.
