Three Thailand soldiers were injured by a landmine while patrolling the border with Cambodia. The incident occurred several days after both neighboring countries agreed to a ceasefire following five days of violent conflict last month.
One soldier lost a leg while the other two sustained injuries. The landmine exploded after one of them stepped on it while patrolling the area between Sisaket province in Thailand and Preah Vihear in Cambodia on Saturday morning, according to the Royal Thai Armed Forces.
One soldier suffered severe leg injuries, another had injuries to the back and arm, and the third soldier experienced extreme pressure damage to the ear.
The Cambodian Ministry of Defense stated that they have not received clear confirmation from the frontline troops in Cambodia regarding the explosion. The ministry added that their military respects the spirit of the ceasefire.
Thailand stated that the incident occurred in their territory, in an area that had just been cleared of landmines. Thailand will file a complaint against Cambodia for violating the agreement prohibiting the use of landmines and Thailand's sovereignty, according to a statement from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited by Al Jazeera.
Both Thailand and Cambodia are signatories to the Ottawa Convention opposing landmines. This is the third incident in recent weeks where Thai soldiers were injured by landmines while patrolling along the border.
Two previous similar incidents resulted in the lowest point in diplomatic relations between the two countries and sparked a five-day battle.
The two Southeast Asian neighboring countries were involved in deadly clashes at the border on July 24-28, 2025. The war was the worst battle between the two countries in over a decade. The armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia resulted in 43 deaths.
