TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 32 airports in several regions of India have resumed operations following the ceasefire decision between India and Pakistan on Monday, May 12, 2025. The airport closure resulted in the cancellation of more than 300 flights per day and left thousands of passengers stranded.
India's Airport Authority (AAI) announced that 32 temporarily closed airports are now allowed to resume operations. Airlines affected by the closure have begun to restore flight schedules starting Monday evening local time.
"It is announced that these airports are now available for immediate civil aircraft operations. Travelers are advised to check the flight status directly with the airlines and monitor the airlines' websites for routine updates," said AAI in its statement as quoted from Indian Express.
For the past few days, there was almost no civilian aircraft activity north of Delhi, except in Dehradun. This includes most of Rajasthan and Gujarat, where some sensitive airports near the India-Pakistan border and major Indian Air Force stations are located.
The list of reopened airports includes Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Uttarlai, Rajkot, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Dharamshala, Bathinda, Patiala, Pathankot, Shimla, Kishangarh, Hindon, Porbandar, Mundra, and Kandla as reported by Times of India. Most of these airports are located on defense airfields, and some of them serve only a few commercial flights per day.
The temporary airport closure not only affected civilian movement but also caused delays in cargo logistics, emergency medical flights, and tourist-related travels. With the full reopening of the airspace, airlines are striving to normalize flight operations and increase capacity in the coming days.
IndiGo airline announced the reopening of flights from Delhi to Chandigarh, Delhi to Jammu, and Delhi to Amritsar. Meanwhile, other routes will be operational in the coming days. "According to government directives, airports that were recently closed are now available for airline operations. IndiGo has reopened flight ticket bookings and resumed operations starting today, May 12, 2025, gradually on specific routes," statement from IndiGo.
Air India Express also announced the gradual restoration of flights from previously closed airports. "Starting tomorrow, services will be resumed on routes including Hindon-Bengaluru, Jammu-Delhi, Jammu-Srinagar, and Srinagar-Delhi. The operation on Hindon-Mumbai is planned to resume the next day," statement from Air India Express. The restoration of other flights, including international services from Amritsar, is expected to follow starting May 15.
Meanwhile, other airlines stated that they are striving to resume flights on suspended routes but did not provide a specific timeframe.
The airport closure was implemented to safeguard airspace traffic from potential hazards after Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, until Saturday, May 10, 2025. Initially, 25 airports near the India-Pakistan border, or those located on Indian Air Force bases, were closed. However, with the increasing tensions between India and Pakistan, the airport closure was extended until Thursday, May 15, 2025, and the list of closed airports expanded to 32.
