90 Firefighters Deployed to Contain Plywood Warehouse Blaze in East Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Jakarta’s Fire and Rescue Agency (Sudin Gulkarmat) has continued efforts to isolate residual flames following a fire that broke out at a plywood warehouse in Cipinang, Pulogadung, on Tuesday night. According to Abdul Wahid, head of operations at the agency, 90 personnel and 18 fire trucks were deployed to carry out cooling operations.

"The focus is on cooling down the scene while checking the structure and remaining hot spots," said Wahid in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 14, as quoted by Antara.

The Tuesday night fire destroyed a 500-square-meter warehouse located on Jalan Bekasi Raya, RT 01/RW 16. The warehouse belongs to a man identified as Haji Iyon.

According to Wahid, firefighters were alerted via a WhatsApp message from a local resident who reported flames suddenly erupting inside the building. “The fire quickly spread throughout the warehouse,” he said.

The alert came in at 11:29 p.m. local time, and fire crews arrived on the scene at 11:41 p.m. The flames were contained by 1:09 a.m., with cooling efforts beginning at 2:20 a.m. and continuing into the morning.

Despite the plywood’s highly flammable nature, which accelerated the spread, responders managed to contain the blaze in short order. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, pending further investigation. Police are still looking into whether it was triggered by an electrical short circuit or other factors.

The fire forced the evacuation of 20 households, displacing 50 residents in total. "No fatalities were reported. We have yet to estimate the material losses, as the data is still being collected," Wahid added.
