TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bandarlampung City Health Office recorded a spike in acute respiratory tract infection (ISPA) cases in recent days, according to data from the early warning and response system (SKDR) from September 4 to 7, 2026.

Respiratory issues reached 527 cases on September 4, which surged to 632 cases the following day. "It reached 716 cases on September 7, 2026," said Muhtadi Arsyad Tumenggung, Head of the Bandarlampung City Health Office, on Tuesday, September 8.

The spike occurred across several sub-districts, with the largest observed in the districts of East Telukbetung, Kedamaian, Rajabasa, South Telukbetung, Sukarame, and Central Tanjungkarang.

"This spike in respiratory tract infections coincides with the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau," Muhtadi said, but emphasized that there's no definitive conclusion yet that it was caused directly by volcanic ash, due to the nature of the short-term data.

The city's health office, he added, pledged to strengthen surveillance to comprehensively assess the real impact on the ground.

"Furthermore, a number of comorbidities potentially related to air quality disturbances, such as pneumonia, asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), eye irritation, and dermatitis, remain normal and stable," he said.

As a precautionary measure, the office would validate the case numbers to ensure no duplicates of errors in inputting the data. "We will request daily reports from public health centers across Bandarlampung," he said.

Monitoring would be prioritized in sub-districts with the highest increase in reported respiratory tract infections. "To paint a most accurate picture of case developments and to detect any changes in disease patterns in the community as early as possible," he said.
