TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced its readiness to merge with the Geological Agency, as previously mandated by President Prabowo Subianto.
BMKG's Secretary-General, Guswanto, said on Tuesday that the country's weather agency would comply with the president's directive "to improve public services and support disaster mitigation efforts."
According to Guswanto, BMKG and the Geological Agency have long been strategic partners, with similar missions towards ensuring people's safety. BMKG and the Geological Agency complement each other in the chain of information on geophysical and terrestrial disaster threats, especially earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis.
Guswanto emphasized that BMKG's role in monitoring, analyzing, and disseminating disaster threat information will continue. "And it will continue to be strengthened by the President's directives," he said.
Furthermore, Guswanto confirmed that the proposal to merge BMKG with the Geological Agency came from Prabowo. "He conveyed it in a limited meeting," he said.
But he did not respond clearly to journalists' queries about whether BMKG had previously entertained the proposal to merge with the Geological Agency.
President Prabowo had previously raised the possibility of integrating BMKG with the Geological Agency, which works under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. He expressed the idea during a limited meeting on disaster management developments, following a series of disasters—from earthquakes to volcanic eruptions—that have struck various regions of Indonesia.
During that meeting, Prabowo asked the Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, to collaborate more closely with various ministries and other agencies. "Later on, we will consider whether the Geological Agency should be integrated with BMKG. But we will discuss this later," Prabowo said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Prabowo did not elaborate further on the proposal to merge the two agencies.
