TEMPO.COJakarta - PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) is conducting a limited trial of ticket inspection services using facial recognition technology. The trial is targeting pedestrians at the Merak Port in Banten and Bakauheni in Lampung, during Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026.

"In addition to strengthening safety aspects, ASDP is also conducting a limited trial of face recognition services for pedestrian passengers," said ASDP Corporate Secretary Windy Andale, citing Antara on Monday, December 22, 2025.

He stated that the face recognition trial is not mandatory as it is still being conducted as an exercise. It will be continuously evaluated before being fully and permanently implemented according to operational needs.

Windy believes that the trial utilization of the latest technology aims to test the readiness of systems and service flow during peak periods, so that in the future, the quality of service can be improved to be faster, more efficient, and reliable. "This trial is not mandatory and is conducted as an exercise," explained Windy.

Furthermore, he explained that the face recognition trial is part of operational readiness so that in the future, especially during the 2026 Eid transportation, the service can be implemented more maturely, comfortably, and still prioritize safety.

Windy added that with weather vigilance, personnel readiness, and gradual and measured service improvements, ASDP is committed to providing safe, orderly, and responsible ferry services for the public during the Christmas and New Year period in 2026.

Previously, ASDP President Director Heru Widodo stated that Christmas and New Year transportation prioritizes safety by ensuring that the docking-unloading and sailing processes are carried out in a measured and professional manner. "In dynamic maritime weather conditions, safety remains the company's top priority. Every docking, unloading, and sailing process is done carefully and measuredly," said Heru.

He also mentioned that operational adjustments are made to ensure the safety of passengers, ship crews, and all service users, even though at times it may impact service delays.

In addition, ASDP continues to strengthen coordination with various parties, such as the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Port Security and Authority Office (KSOP), BPTD, and the Port Operational Control Center (POCC) to realize the smoothness and safety of Christmas and New Year transportation.

ASDP also strengthens services on 15 strategic routes to ensure safe and comfortable crossings and to maintain the smooth flow of local homecoming, tourism, and logistics distribution during the 2026 Christmas and New Year transportation.

These routes include Merak-Bakauheni, Ketapang-Gilimanuk, Jangkar-Lembar, Kayangan-Pototano, Tanjung Api-Api-Tanjung Kelian, Telaga Punggur-Tanjung Uban, Ajibata-Ambarita, Nias-Sibolga, as well as Padangbai-Lembar, Kariangau-Penajam, Bajoe-Kolaka, Bira-Pamatata, Bitung-Ternate, Hunimua-Waipirit, and Bolok-Rote. These routes are the main strategic focus in supporting local homecoming, tourism, and logistics distribution during Christmas and New Year.

Based on projections, ASDP states that the movement of passengers on the 15 national monitoring routes is estimated to reach approximately 547,000 people, growing by 4.3 percent compared to the previous Christmas and New Year. Meanwhile, vehicle numbers are predicted to reach 868,000 units or increase by 8.9 percent.
