TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ten patients at the Hasan Sadikin General Hospital (RSHS) in Bandung have tested positive for the influenza A subclade K virus, known as super flu. One patient, who had comorbid conditions, passed away.
"Whether this directly resulted from the (super flu) virus, we cannot state as the patient had many comorbid conditions," said Yovita Hartantri, Chairperson of the New Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Disease (Pinere) Team at RSHS Bandung, during a press conference on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
According to Yovita, the deceased patient was elderly and had been treated in the intensive care unit (ICU). In addition to super flu, the patient suffered from conditions including stroke and heart disease. "Having comorbid conditions at an advanced age, especially with prolonged treatment, indicates the potential for severe illness and mortality," stated Yovita.
RSHS Bandung recently received test results from the Ministry of Health indicating that ten patients were positive for the influenza A subclade K virus. Yovita mentioned that since 2023, following the decline of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Health requested all hospitals to conduct surveillance, especially on patients with influenza-like illness or severe acute respiratory infection.
Patients with symptoms such as cough, fever, cold, and shortness of breath underwent swab tests. According to Yovita, screening data indicated an increase in influenza A cases in 2025 from August to September, peaking in October before decreasing in November. Samples were sent to the Central Health Laboratory for Biological Research in Jakarta. "The sequencing results were obtained this January," she said.
Out of the ten patients at RSHS Bandung infected with super flu, two were infants aged 9 months and 1 year. The majority were aged 20-60, and two were over 60. According to Yovita, they received treatment at RSHS Bandung between September and November 2025. Two patients were in critical condition, including the one who passed away.
Medical and Nursing Director of RSHS Bandung, Iwan Abdul Rachman, mentioned that the term super flu is not standardized in medicine. However, the public uses it to describe severe influenza symptoms, rapid spread, and a combination of viruses. "There is no need to panic in facing this situation, as the trend is also decreasing," he said.
According to him, the public must prevent transmission by regularly washing hands and wearing masks. Those experiencing influenza symptoms are requested to avoid spreading them to others. "This disease falls under the category of droplet infection," stated Iwan.
