TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts cloudy to partly cloudy weather conditions will dominate most of Indonesia on Sunday.
BMKG forecaster Bintari stated that areas predicted to be cloudy and partly cloudy include Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya.
"Meanwhile, on the island of Kalimantan, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, and Samarinda are expected to be covered in clouds," Bintari said in a weather forecast broadcast followed from Jakarta on Sunday.
In the eastern region, cloudy and partly cloudy weather is potential in Mataram, Kupang, Gorontalo, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke.
Meanwhile, sunny and partly cloudy weather is potential in Semarang, Denpasar, Makassar, and Manado.
Light rain is forecast for Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Palu, and Ambon. In several other areas, smoke, haze, and hazy air are predicted for Padang, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Banjarmasin, Kendari, and Nabire.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) also warned the public to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain in the Riau Islands, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi.
According to the BMKG, these weather conditions are influenced by atmospheric dynamics, including the presence of tropical cyclone 97W, which has been observed in the Pacific Ocean northeast of Papua.
The cyclone, with a minimum pressure of 1,006 hectopascals and maximum wind speeds of 15 knots, is moving westward and still has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 to 72 hours.
Although it has a low chance of becoming a tropical cyclone, the system induces the formation of convergence and confluence areas in a number of Indonesian waters and the surrounding areas, thereby increasing the potential for rain cloud growth, especially around low-pressure areas and along areas where winds converge and decelerate.
The BMKG urges the public to continue monitoring the latest weather information and be aware of potential weather changes that may occur at any time.
