TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the number of displaced residents due to the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) surged by 16,394 on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Berton Simanjuntak, Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, said the surge was caused by data updates and validation on the quake-hit region.
Berton explained that the number of the displaced dropped in the previous two days, but it surged again today following the data update. The updated data brought the number of displaced residents due to the NTT earthquake to 21,552.
"After data validation, the number of displaced residents in Ngada, which was previously only 3,259, has now increased to 21,552. So, the number of evacuees in both centralized and independent locations is now more accurate," he said in an online press conference on Saturday afternoon.
The death toll from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck NTT on August 15 has reached 111. Of that number, 56.4 percent of the victims were women, while 43.6 percent were men.
"As for age groups, the largest group is the elderly, followed by adults, children, and teenagers, followed by infants and toddlers," said Berton.
