TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nepal has reversed its earlier decision to reject foreign assistance for search and rescue operations following devastating floods that have killed hundreds of people, amid what officials described as pressure from other countries.
The decision was reported by The Kathmandu Post, citing a senior government official.
On Friday, August 28, Nepal's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Chhetri said the country did not require foreign assistance for search and rescue operations following the disaster.
However, the government later agreed to allow limited foreign assistance, particularly from search and rescue teams and experts from countries whose citizens remain missing in the floods.
““We received massive pressure from the international community to allow at least search-and-rescue teams and some experts because their citizens have also gone missing in the floods,” the official was quoted as saying by The Kathmandu Post on Friday.
“We are allowing a limited number of experts in certain areas.”
Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal told the newspaper that foreign experts would assist local rescue teams in identifying bodies so authorities could return them to their families as quickly as possible.
Foreign Assistance for Flood Response
The United Nations, the European Union, and several countries had previously provided financial assistance to Nepal as it dealt with the widespread destruction caused by the floods.
Powerful floodwaters surged into the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal's mountainous region on Wednesday, August 26.
The disaster was initially reported to have been triggered by an earthquake and subsequent landslides.
However, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said on Thursday, August 27, that the seismic activity was caused by a glacier collapse rather than underground tremors.
According to the latest data, the death toll from the floods in Nepal has reached 626.
