TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nepal has asked Meta and TikTok to remove gruesome images, AI-generated videos, fake donation QR codes, and misleading posts circulating in the wake of the devastating floods that have killed over 630 people thus far.
Government officials have held talks with Nepal-based representatives of the social media platforms to urge swift action against content that could mislead the public, hinder relief efforts, or further aggravate the grief of affected families, local media outlet The Kathmandu Post reported on Friday, as quoted from Anadolu.
Bijay Kumar Roy, coordinator of the government's task force on social media regulation and management, said authorities have asked the companies to immediately remove inappropriate and misleading content after it is flagged.
Officials have also reportedly urged the platforms to make their algorithms more proactive in detecting and blocking fake content and graphics. Local authorities say old footage has been re-circulated as if it were from the latest disaster.
Meanwhile, AI-generated videos and images are being presented as if they were real events. Fake QR codes soliciting donations for flood victims have also emerged.
According to the report, Meta and TikTok currently take between 24 and 48 hours to respond to reported posts. This has prompted government officials to urge both platforms to expedite action on problematic content.
Previously, flash floods and landslides struck northern and central Nepal on Wednesday, inundating settlements along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli Rivers and destroying homes, bridges, and roads.
On the Chinese side, mud and debris from a landslide hit Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet. The disaster cut off road access, disrupted communications, and disrupted power supplies.
Hundreds of residents, construction workers, and tourists in the affected area of Gyirong County have been evacuated to safer areas, while search and rescue operations are ongoing.
