TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Borobudur Temple in Magelang Regency, Central Java, is expected to be one of the most popular destinations during the Christmas and New Year holidays. It is estimated that 170,000 domestic and international tourists will visit Borobudur Temple during that time.

Gistang Ricard, the commercial director of InJourney Destination Management (IDM), or PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko, stated that visitors will fill the temple area during the estimated peak period of December 25-31, 2025. "In line with the national agenda from December 22, 2025, to January 1, 2026, during the Nataru holiday, our target is around 170,000 tourists," he said.

New Year's Agenda at Borobudur Temple

The managers of Borobudur Temple have prepared various attractions for the New Year holiday. One of these is Kampung Medang, which offers culinary delights. There is also Kampung Dolanan, which is ideal for tourists with families. This village offers traditional games for all ages. "There are many traditional games for children there. Furthermore, on Christmas Day, there will also be a special event, including a choir performance, and we will be presenting gifts to the visitors," he said.

For tourists who want to enjoy the last sunset in 2025, Borobudur Temple will provide a special sunset moment that can be enjoyed from the top of the temple. Also, for those who wish to witness the first sunrise of the new year, there is Borobudur Sunrise.

"Especially for domestic tourists, we are offering a promo at Rp350,000 for them to visit Borobudur Temple. Then, on December 30, 2025, we will present the Mahakarya Borobudur cultural performance in collaboration with the Sabang Merauke performance, something that is unique to Indonesia," he added.

Limited Visitor Capacity

The number of visitors allowed to enter the structure will be limited during the Christmas and New Year holidays. This is done to ensure that the largest Buddhist temple site remains comfortable and sustainable after its arrangement.

The Chief Executive of Borobudur Authority Board (BOB), Agustin Peranginangin, stated that only around 400-450 people will be allowed per time unit. "Not like before, when there used to be directly 1,000 people during the previous management," he said.
