TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Skywatchers across the United Kingdom (UK) will have an opportunity to witness July’s full moon, widely known as the Buck Moon, this week as clear weather is expected to provide favorable viewing conditions across much of the country.
The Buck Moon will reach its peak illumination at 3:36 p.m. BST (GMT+1) on Wednesday, July 29, although the exact moment will occur while the Moon is below the UK horizon. As a result, observers will not see the Moon at its fullest during the daytime. Instead, it will appear fully illuminated to the naked eye on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, offering the best opportunities for viewing. As reported by The Independent, the Moon will look full despite peaking below the horizon.
According to AOL, the Moon is expected to rise at approximately 8:07 p.m. BST on Wednesday, allowing millions of people across the UK to observe one of the year's most anticipated celestial events after sunset.
Why Is It Called the Buck Moon?
The name Buck Moon originates from the annual growth cycle of male deer, or bucks, which begin developing a new set of antlers during July. The tradition of naming full moons dates back centuries, with many Indigenous communities and early agricultural societies using lunar cycles to mark seasonal changes throughout the year.
July’s full moon is also known by several other traditional names:
- Thunder Moon, reflecting the frequent summer thunderstorms that occur during the month.
- Hay Moon, referencing the traditional hay harvest season.
Why Does the Moon Appear Full for More Than One Night?
Although a full moon has one precise peak moment, it often appears completely round for about a day before and after reaching full illumination.
This occurs because the Moon's orbit around Earth is gradual, meaning the illuminated portion visible from Earth changes only slightly over several hours. The Moon completes one full lunar phase cycle approximately every 29.5 days, resulting in a full moon roughly once each month.

Current weather forecasts indicate that much of the UK will enjoy favorable conditions for observing the Buck Moon.
Central, southern and eastern England are expected to experience the clearest skies after sunset, with light winds and only limited cloud cover. The Independent also reported that viewing conditions should generally remain favorable across the country, although parts of Scotland could experience periods of cloud that may partially obscure the Moon.
For the best experience, observers are encouraged to find an open location away from tall buildings and trees shortly after moonrise.
