TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An AirAsia flight bound for China returned to Kuala Lumpur due to engine issues. The aircraft landed safely with no injuries on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

The Airbus A320 aircraft with flight number AK128 was en route to Shenzhen. According to AirAsia, as quoted from Reuters, the aircraft turned back to Kuala Lumpur International Airport due to "an abnormal indication in one of the engines.”

The Selangor State Fire Department in Malaysia, as reported by Channel News Asia, previously stated that a "pneumatic ducting burst" triggered a fire in the right engine shortly after takeoff at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesday. AirAsia stated that based on the inspection results, there was no engine fire, but a damaged duct caused hot air to escape into the engine.

Firefighters ensured that all passengers and crew members exited after the aircraft landed safely. There were no injured passengers or cabin crew.

AirAsia stated that all 171 passengers were transferred to another aircraft, which landed at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport on Thursday morning. The aircraft is expected to resume operations on March 31, 2025. Malaysian aviation authorities will investigate the incident, according to local media reports.
