TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An 11-year-old boy in eastern China swallowed a 100-gram gold bar while playing at home, requiring hospitalization.

The incident, which took place in early April, necessitated an operation to remove the gold from his intestine.

The boy, identified only by his last name, Qian, complained of slight abdominal swelling but did not report any other discomfort. Concerned, his parents took him to the children's hospital for examination.

X-rays revealed a large metal object lodged in his intestine, which turned out to be a gold bar, as reported by the South China Morning Post, citing NDTV.

Initially, the doctor attempted a conservative treatment approach by prescribing medication to induce the boy to have a bowel movement, hoping the gold bar would pass naturally.

However, after two days, follow-up X-rays showed that the gold bar was still stuck.

Fearing the possibility of intestinal obstruction or perforation, the medical team opted to proceed with surgery.

Instead of making a large incision, the surgeon used an endoscopic procedure to remove the metal bar.

The gold was successfully extracted within just 30 minutes, and within 48 hours, the boy had resumed normal eating and was discharged from the hospital, making a full recovery without any lingering issues.

In a similar incident in 2021, a nine-year-old boy in Vietnam accidentally swallowed a small metal screw and a magnet, leading to intestinal blockage and perforation.

Emergency surgery was performed to remove the foreign objects and save the boy's life.
