TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The England national team secured their spot in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Norway 2-1 in extra time in the quarterfinal match at Miami Stadium, USA, on Sunday morning, July 12, 2026.
Jude Bellingham emerged as the hero of The Three Lions' victory by scoring the decisive goal in the 93rd minute, shortly after the extra time began. The 23-year-old midfielder took advantage of a rebound inside the penalty box to beat goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.
Norway initially took the lead in the 36th minute. Andreas Schjelderup scored a powerful shot from outside the penalty box after receiving a pass from Martin Odegaard. The goal was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) before being confirmed by referee Clement Turpin.
England equalized just before halftime. In the second minute of injury time in the first half, Anthony Gordon sent a breakthrough pass to Jude Bellingham, who immediately took a shot at Norway's goal to level the score at 1-1.
Harry Kane actually managed to score against Norway at the end of the first half, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside position.
In the second half, Norway threatened again. Torbjorn Lysaker Heggem momentarily scored a goal in the 55th minute through a rebound. However, after a VAR review, the referee disallowed the goal due to a foul in the process of creating the goal.
The match was intense until the end of normal time. England and Norway both had several opportunities, including a header by Kristoffer Ajer hitting the goalpost in the 76th minute.
Coach Thomas Tuchel made several substitutions to increase the intensity of the attack by bringing in Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Reece James, Djed Spence, and Morgan Rogers.
The 1-1 draw remained until 90 minutes, leading the match to be extended to extra time.
Just two minutes into the extra time, England turned the tables. Starting from Harry Kane's header, which Nyland managed to save, the loose ball fell to Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder effortlessly struck the ball to give England a 2-1 lead.
England was awarded a penalty in the 99th minute after Oscar Bobb was deemed to have fouled an opponent in the penalty area. However, the decision was overturned after the referee reviewed the VAR footage.
Nyland once again showcased his brilliance by thwarting two successive opportunities from Djed Spence and Bukayo Saka in the second half of extra time. On the other hand, Norway lost Erling Haaland, who was substituted early in the additional time.
As the final whistle blew, the score remained 2-1 in favor of England. This result propelled Thomas Tuchel's team to the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup, while Norway's journey came to an end in the quarterfinals.
