The Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, who is also the Head of the Task Force for the Acceleration of Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, reported that five villages in Aceh still do not have access to electricity. Tito delivered this report during a Coordination Meeting of the Post-Disaster Management Task Force with the government in Aceh on Saturday, January 10, 2025.
Tito explained that generally, the electricity grid in Aceh is available. However, the distribution to several districts and remote villages is hampered because the electricity poles in those areas have collapsed.
"In general, the main grid is on. But the network heading to the districts, especially the remote villages, has collapsed. The poles collapse every 500 meters. That's why it's still not functioning," Tito said as monitored through a live broadcast on the House of Representatives (DPR) YouTube channel.
For the time being, Tito mentioned that the electricity needs in the affected areas could be supported using generators owned by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI), and the Police. However, out of the affected areas, there are five villages that still do not have any electricity supply.
"The way to do it is indeed to use the generators from the BNPB and TNI. But there are 5 villages that are still completely without electricity. I forgot the details," said the former Chief of Police.
On the other hand, Tito claimed that the electricity condition in other disaster-affected provinces, such as West Sumatra and North Sumatra, has returned to normal.
During the meeting with the DPR, Tito also conveyed that the government task force has prepared various aid programs for the disaster-affected areas in Sumatra. One of the priorities is the reduction of refugees. "We consider this to be important, as a symbol of accelerating recovery," Tito said during the meeting.
Tito stated that the government will also deploy additional personnel to clean up the mud from the floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The additional manpower for handling the floods in Sumatra will include the police and military personnel.
Tito requested at least an additional 5,000 police officers and 10,000 soldiers. "We will see which areas we will send them to based on the map," he said.
The additional personnel will clean up the mud from the rivers and the terrain. Post-disaster mud still covers a number of streets, houses, shops, rice fields, and rivers. Tito hoped that the police could send additional personnel to Sumatra before they are occupied with security measures during the upcoming Ramadan period.
