TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Geological Agency recorded a total of 41 destructive earthquakes throughout 2025 in Indonesia. "The occurrence of destructive earthquakes last year was the highest in the past 25 years," said the Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, in her statement on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Meanwhile, according to data published by the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) through its social media account on January 2, 2026, a total of 43,439 earthquake events were recorded throughout Indonesia in 2025. The majority, 43,286 events, were earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 5, and 153 earthquakes had a magnitude higher than 5. A total of 973 earthquakes were felt by the community, and 25 of them resulted in damage.

The Geological Agency defines a destructive earthquake as an event that causes loss of life, building damage, property loss, as well as surface geological damage, such as ground cracks, subsidence, undulating ground, ground movement, and liquefaction. Based on Geological Agency data, the trend of an increase in the number of destructive earthquakes in Indonesia has been occurring for at least the past five years.

The destructive earthquakes in 2025 began with an earthquake in Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, on January 8, originating from the thrust fault behind Flores. The latest event occurred in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, on December 28, originating from the active faults of Sumatra. "Most of these destructive earthquake events are caused by active faults located on land," said Lana.

Several of these active faults have distributions and characteristics that have not been well mapped, for example, earthquakes in Bima on January 8 and 14, 2025, Jember (January 16), East Kolaka (January 29), East Luwu (March 7), Bogor City (April 10), and Sumenep (September 30).

Meanwhile, there were five destructive earthquakes originating from the subduction zone, namely in Gorontalo on May 3 with a magnitude of 6.0 and M6.2 on November 5. Then Bengkulu on May 23 (M6.3), Southeast Maluku on July 14 (M6.9), and Simeulue on November 27 (M6.5).

According to the Geological Agency, the destructive earthquakes of 2025 did not cause significant impacts, there were no shallow earthquake hazards, and they did not trigger tsunamis. Furthermore, there were also no instances of subsidence, ground movement, and liquefaction.

On the other hand, secondary hazards such as ground cracks occurred in the Southeast Maluku earthquake on July 14, and then in Probolinggo (July 18) and Sarmi (August 12).
